Service description:
We aim to:

- Ensure that the care and education provided each day is consistent and is offered by a trained, fully integrated multidisciplinary staff team.
- Devise individual education and care programmes which aim to address the challenging behaviours that so often block socialisation and learning.
- Provide a safe, secure and structured environment in which pupils can gain confidence and achieve their potential.
- Help pupils to learn ways in which to manage and control their own behaviour.
- Work with the pupils to help them to develop their own self-help skills, leading to a greater level of independence and improved self-esteem.
- Provide opportunities for our pupils to learn socialisation skills both within school and in the local community.
- Provide physical exercise, which not only improves health but also releases unrestrained energy.
- Provide musical activities both within and outside of the classroom, as this is often a successful medium for pupils with limited communication skills.
- Work closely with parents and key staff from placing authorities to ensure that everyone is working towards the same goal.
- Involve pupils' families in the life of the school by inviting them to reviews, social events and to help with fund raising.
- Provide regular detailed reports of pupils' progress and work together with all concerned to plan post-Kisimul School placements.

Kisimul School is based across two sites in Lincolnshire, and meets the needs of learners with Severe Learning Difficulties, Autism, and Challenging Behaviour. The school currently has 70 students, aged between 8-19 years of age.

All young people within the school met or exceeded National Benchmarks for levels of progression between 2011-14, based on their priority SEN, and also their relative starting points on entry. All young people within the school have a comprehensive Individual Pupil Care Plan, which outlines their communication, learning, care and behaviour management profiles, and individual risk assessments. This profile is a live document, which is shared with LA professionals and parents and outlines strategies and interventions which are applied consistently across both education and residential provision. Regular internal Multi-disciplinary meetings are held to discuss interventions for young people, and informed by behavioural analysis completed by Psychology teams to ensure that outcomes are evidence based.

Kisimul School was awarded Outstanding by OFSTED in November 2012. The school is designated an Outstanding Provider of ASDAN accreditation, and has also received a Makaton Friendly award. The school is currently working towards NAS accreditation, and all education staff received Autism Education Trust Level 2 training in Sept 2013. Residential Provision at both Swinderby and Acacia Hall is currently deemed Outstanding by OFSTED.

Kisimul also has its own integrated therapy teams, with Psychology, Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy and Aromatherapy teams working to meet the aims outlined in Individual Pupil Care Plans and Statements of SEN.

Kisimul has an extensive training programme in place for all staff, and utilises internal and external expertise to ensure that strategies and interventions for both residential and day students are individualised and based on effective and thorough assessment of needs.

Kisimul School has outstanding facilities and environments, purpose built for the priority needs of the learner cohort of SLD/ ASD. We have a heated swimming pool, gym, sensory rooms, soft play, animal husbandry provision, sensory integration barn and extensive outdoor activity areas. Kisimul has a fleet of minibuses to enable regular access to the local community, and vocational learning opportunities form an integral part of the school curriculum.

Kisimul uses a range of augmentative communication systems, including Makaton and PECS to support the needs of learners with impaired communication and SLD/ ASD.
